The Real-Life Side of VSG Transformation

“Success can still include struggle. Healing can still include blunders. Transformation can still be beautiful, even when it is awkward.”

Bariatric & Beyond: Successes, Blunders, Foamies, and All

Welcome to Bariatric & Beyond, where we are here for the success stories, the sacred transformations, the awkward lessons, the body wisdom, the “well, that was humbling” moments, and yes — the first-time foamies.

Because if you know, you know.

And if you do not know yet, bless you, sweet friend. You may one day know.

This journey is not all before-and-after photos, smaller jeans, and inspirational music playing in the background.

Sometimes it is standing in the kitchen wondering why one bite too many suddenly turned into a full-body conversation.

Sometimes it is learning that your new stomach has opinions.

Sometimes it is realizing that “just a little more” is not always little anymore.

Sometimes it is protein goals, water goals, vitamin reminders, food grief, body changes, emotional waves, and laughing because the alternative is crying into your tiny plate.

And sometimes it is victory.

Big victory.

Sacred victory.

Life-changing victory.

Jason and I both had robotic VSG gastric sleeve surgery on January 31, 2023, in The Woodlands, Texas. We went into this journey together, and by 2026, we are now three years post-op.

Together, we have released hundreds of pounds.

Jason has released over 200 pounds.

Andrea has released over 150 pounds.

Those numbers are real, and they matter. But they are not the whole story.

The whole story includes the healing markers, the metabolic changes, the changed relationship with food, the emotional awareness, the body changes, the mental health work, the support systems, the blunders, the bravery, and the ongoing commitment to keep choosing wellness.

Bariatric Surgery Is a Tool, Not the Finish Line

Because bariatric surgery is not the finish line.

It is a tool.

A powerful tool.

A life-changing tool.

But still, only one tool.

The real journey is learning how to live after the tool has done its first big work.

That is where Bariatric & Beyond begins.

Beyond the surgery.

Beyond the scale.

Beyond the first year.

Beyond the compliments.

Beyond the assumptions that everything is suddenly easy.

Beyond the idea that weight loss alone fixes everything.

Because the truth is, your body may change quickly, but your mind, habits, emotions, nervous system, identity, and daily choices may need more time to catch up.

And that is okay.

We are here for that part too.

We are here for the person who has lost the weight but still feels unsure in their body.

We are here for the person who is learning how to eat again.

We are here for the person who is afraid of regain.

We are here for the person who celebrates every lab improvement.

We are here for the person who forgot to chew slowly and got a very clear reminder.

We are here for the person who has cried over food, clothes, energy, attention, old grief, new hope, or all of the above.

We are here for the person who needs someone to say, “You are not broken. You are learning.”

Foamies, Body Wisdom, and the Power of Peer Support

And yes, we are here for the foamies.

Foamies are one of those bariatric experiences that can feel strange, scary, funny later, and deeply humbling in the moment. Many bariatric patients use the word “foamies” to describe that uncomfortable saliva or foamy response that can happen when food does not sit well, is eaten too fast, is not chewed enough, or the body simply says, “No thank you.”

It is not glamorous.

It is not cute.

But it is part of the real-life learning curve for many people.

And that is exactly why peer support matters.

Because some lessons are easier to move through when someone else can say, “Yes, that happened to me too. Slow down. Breathe. Listen to your body. And call your provider if something feels wrong or persistent.”

That is the heart of Embrace Change.

We are not here to give medical advice.

We are not here to replace your surgeon, doctor, dietitian, therapist, or professional care team.

We are here as peers with lived experience.

We are here to share the practical, emotional, funny, messy, sacred, and human side of transformation.

The side that includes protein shakes and prayer.

The side that includes lab work and laughter.

The side that includes meal planning and mindset.

The side that includes grief and gratitude.

The side that includes tiny bites, big feelings, and learning to trust your body again.

The Wins, the Blunders, and the Beauty of Becoming

Our journey has included major successes.

Weight release.

Metabolic improvement.

More mobility.

More breath.

More awareness.

More choice.

A new relationship with health.

A new understanding of our bodies.

A deeper commitment to ongoing wellness.

It has also included blunders.

Eating too fast.

Learning foods do not always feel the same after surgery.

Forgetting that hydration is not optional.

Realizing vitamins and labs matter.

Navigating symptoms we did not expect.

Facing emotional hunger.

Meeting old coping patterns with new awareness.

Learning that the body keeps the score, even when the scale changes.

We have had victories, and we have had “well, now we know” moments.

Both belong.

Both teach.

Both are part of the becoming.

Bariatric transformation is not a straight road. It is more like a winding garden path with butterflies, mud puddles, sunshine, weeds, blooms, and unexpected weather.

Some days you feel like a monarch in full flight.

Some days you feel like you are back in the cocoon wondering who approved this renovation.

Either way, transformation is still happening.

At Embrace Change, we believe the journey deserves honesty.

Not shame.

Not perfection.

Not pretending.

Honesty.

Because people need to know that success can still include struggle.

Healing can still include blunders.

Progress can still include rainy days.

And transformation can still be beautiful, even when it is awkward.

The Conversation Is Just Beginning

That is why we are opening this Bariatric & Beyond conversation.

We want to talk about what worked.

What surprised us.

What humbled us.

What healed.

What still needs support.

What we wish we had known.

What we are still learning.

And how we keep choosing ourselves, one day, one breath, one bite, one boundary, one lab, one walk, one sip of water, one act of self-kindness at a time.

So pull up a chair.

Bring your sweet tea, your protein water, your journal, your questions, your humor, your honesty, and your whole self.

We are here for the sacred transformation.

We are here for the science.

We are here for the support.

We are here for the blunders.

We are here for the butterflies.

We are here for the first-time foamies and the “never doing that again” wisdom that follows.

This is Bariatric & Beyond.

This is Embrace Change.

You are here because you matter too.

Together, Anything Is Possible.
